The commercialism of the holiday season hit me particularly hard this year. Normally I just brush it off, but something about listening to the cheery holiday music while it’s simultaneously trying to get me excited about the latest deals just didn’t sit right. Oh, how I love TED talks. This little conference, which many people don’t know actually started in the mid-80s as a one-time event, started to grow in popularity since 2006 when they decided to post the presentations online. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design, and in addition to the yearly conference, there are now independently organized TEDx events happening all over the globe and throughout the year.

I just finished reading Gary Vaynerchuk’s new book, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook: How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy Social World. I’m tired of seeing disingenuous companies make money through the exploitation of nature and people in third world countries. I want the good guys to win, so I’ve compiled a list of awesome companies I think deserve your attention. If you’re trying to start a company yourself, look to these guys. They’ve shown that you can have profits, AND make the world a better place. In fact, being socially responsible pays off. According to Edelman’s 2012 goodpurpose study, 76 percent of global consumers believe that companies should be able to profit while doing good, which is a 33 percent increase from 2008.
